He visited the University of Berlin (1913-16) and was in the Armee (1916-18). During the economical crisis as seller for belts and
buttons in Berlin.
He learned himself to take photographies having a friend 1926 who was supporting him in technical matters.
In 1927 he began to take shots for Berliner Tageblatt and later for the known Weltspiegel. In 1929-35 he worked for
The Pacific and Atlantic Picture Agency, The Associated Press and Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung. He took several photographies
of famous actors so of Marlene Dietrich
during her shooting for „Der blaue Engel“, 1928) and the photography with a woman in
a black ‚smoking-jacket’ got one of his most famous photographies.
