Brett Weston

 

1911 Born December 16th as the second of 4 sons of Edward Weston in LA

1925 Move to Mexico to his  father; Acquaintance with Diego  Rivera, José Clemente

Orozco,  Modotti; first ambitious  photographs with Edward’s  specialist camera (Graflex)

1927 First exhibition of his own  (relating to lifetime – a total of over  100 own exhibitions)

1928 Opening of a portrait studio in Glendale ( California ) with  Edward Weston; Start of

dark  room work with father

1929 Represented with 18-20  works at the Stuttgart ‘Film and  Photo’ exhibition

1932  Participation in the first  ‘f/64’group exhibition

1935  Studio work with his father in Santa Monica Canyon

1941- 1942 Industrial photography  for North American Aviation and  Douglas Aircraft

1943  Camera assistant at Twentieth Century Fox alongside  portfolios relating to own (free)

 work . 1943- 1946 Period in army under  Rothstein, the ‘Look’ photographer  in Astoria /

Long Island; Development of much New York related photography

1945  Guggenheim grant

1952- 1955 Work on two portfolios  weighing up his father’s lifework  under his supervision

1960  Long stay in Europe

1966- 1967 Portfolio of his ‘hundred best photographs’

1973  NEH grant for a photography project in Alaska

1975  ‘Fifty Years of Photography’  (Beaumont Newhall’s large scale  hiker exhibition)

1991  Wilful destruction of all his  negatives on his 80th birthday (in  order to rule out

unauthorised commissions);  Last years of his life on Hawaii

Cole Weston

 

1919  Born January 30th as the fourth and youngest son of Edward Weston in LA

1935  First camera (Autograflex)     from his brother Brett

1937  Conclusion of theatre/art studies at the Cornish School in Seattle up to 1945 Joined the marines as a welder and photographer during World War II

1945  Various work for Life Magazine

1946  Move to Carmel in order to  support his father, during which  Cole experimented with

the latest  color films and Kodachromes (Eastman Kodak); Over 50 years  of membership in

Carmel ’s  Forest Theatre Guild as well as  direction of over 30 plays

1957   Filming of his first color  photography on the Big Sur Coast ( Monterey peninsula, 

California ); Own portrait business 1958   Following the death of his  father, further pressure

of his art and the publication of his negatives alongside his own course of study in Fine

Photography . 1971   First solo exhibition in San Francisco (worldwide, over 60  exhibitions

in total) . 1975   Talks and workshops relating  to his father’s photography and his  own works

and artistic for; Travel  within the USA , England and  Europe, Russia, Mexico, New

 Zealand / Pacific Ocean countries  for taking photographs and for  inspiring others through

his charismatic and enthusiastic  personality

1988    Own photographic work  takes centre stage; Cole cedes  responsibility for his father’s

estate.

2003    Natural death as the father of  6 children in Carmel

 

 

Cara Weston

was born and raised in Carmel , California . She is the daughter of world famous photographer Cole Weston and Helen Prosser Weston and granddaughter to the gifted world-renowned photographer Edward Weston and Flora Chandler Weston.
 she has lived in a world of photography all her life. She has worked for and with her father Cole Weston during the  as an assistant in all aspects of photography. With her uncle Brett Weston she has worked as an assistant, and as a model for his underwater photography during the late 1970’s. She also spent time assisting black and white photographer Rod Dresser before taking on a position at the Weston Gallery.

Cara spent many years working for, and being the director of the Weston Gallery in Carmel , California . Here she curated numerous shows at the gallery as well as on the road. Some of the more memorable exhibitions were for such artists as Yousuf Karsh, Ansel Adams, and Michael Kenna as well as and not to leave out the great exhibitions and talents of her family Edward Weston, Cole Weston and Brett Weston. On the road she did art shows in Los Angeles and New York that featured the work of many fine art photographers.
She has worked with museums as well as galleries showing and selling the work of many well-known photographers, and many contemporary photographers.  

Currently, Cara is the co-trustee for the Weston family.
